How Long Does It take To learn English?

I am often asked this question and there is no one answer. It depends on so many factors: how often you have classes, how much homework you do, what your current level is, whether you practice and apply your newly gained skills, at what point you consider you’ve learnt English, etc.

However, from having taught English for nearly 20 years, I can answer this:

• If your reasons for learning and your objectives are clear, you’ll learn quicker.
• If you attend all your classes and do the homework, you’ll learn quicker.
• If you go the extra mile and immerse yourself in the language by watching films in English, for example, you’ll learn quicker.

Remember, at the beginning you don’t need to speak perfectly. You just need to make yourself understood. You can perfect your language skills later. We all make mistakes. Acquiring a new language means making mistakes and learning from them. Don’t be afraid!
